Guitar Strings

Guitar strings are the main means by which a guitar creates sound. Regardless of the type of guitar (electric or acoustic), without strings the instrument will remain silent. The type of string to buy depends on the style of guitar.

It is generally not considered a good idea to put nylon guitar strings on an instrument designed for steel strings. A steel string guitar has components such as the nut, saddle and tuning gears that are not set up for the wider nylon strings. These differences can cause numerous problems for the player.

The size (gauge) of guitar strings can have an impact on the sound and playability of the instrument. Thicker strings can produce a higher volume of sound but require a great deal more finger strength. Thinner strings are easier to play, but tend to break easier and don’t produce as much sound.
