Guitars

Guitars have been around, in one form or another, for at least the last 4000 years. However, the modern guitar as we recognize it first appeared in Europe during the Dark Ages. A descendant of the Roman cithara and a cousin to the Scandinavian lute, the guitar has become one of the most popular instruments in history.

Modern guitars are generally put into one of two main categories; acoustic and electric. Acoustic guitars produce their sound by amplifying the vibration of the strings through the hollow body of the instrument itself. Electric guitars rely on an electrically powered amplifier to create sound.

Guitars have had a significant impact on popular music. Country, blues, rock and roll, and other popular genres have all readily incorporated the guitar. Many a garage band has been started by a teenager and their first guitar.
