Bass Guitars

Bass guitars first make their appearance in the middle of the 20th century. Before this period, the bass parts were primarily played on an upright bass, commonly seen in orchestras and swing bands. However, these instruments were quite bulky, hard to transport, and were hard to amplify.

Bass guitars were designed to eliminate all three of these problems. Based on the design of the electric guitar, these instruments were much lighter and easier to play than were the traditional basses of the time. They were also meant to be played through an external amplifier, which helped cut through the other instruments they accompanied.

The invention of bass guitars produced a whole new generation of bass players. The ease of play, as well as the smaller economic investment required, made these instruments extremely popular with young musicians. Today’s bass guitar is more technologically advanced, but still based on the same basic design.
