Acoustic Guitars

Originally, all guitars were acoustic guitars. Before the invention of electricity, and many decades later the electric amplifier, stringed instruments were required to produce their own sound. This was done through the use of a sound board and a hollow instrument body.

Acoustic guitars rely on a transfer of vibration from the strings to the sound box, or body. When a string is plucked, it creates a vibration. This vibration is amplified through the sound board and into the sound box, which further amplifies the sound, making it audible to the listener.

Acoustic guitars have a very distinctive sound. A musician often prefers this sound to that of an electric, but needs a greater volume of sound than the acoustic can generate by itself. For this reason, many modern versions include a means by which to use an electric amplifier, while maintaining the unique sound of an acoustic instrument.
