The modern guitar has its roots in the Baroque period. While there are plenty of examples of guitar-like instruments being played over the last several thousand years, guitars as we recognize them first appeared in the 15th and 16th centuries. Composers such as Gaspar Sanz and players like Francesco Corbetta brought guitar music to the forefront of popular music of the day.

The guitars of today can be found in a number of different configurations and designs. Acoustic, classical and electric variations all exist, and each has its own unique sound and temperament. Many guitar players own one of each.

The classical guitar is the most direct descendant of the Baroque era guitar. These instruments have somewhat wider necks and utilize nylon strings. They are played by plucking the strings with the fingertips of the right hand, using the fingernails as picks. There is a substantial repertoire of music from the Baroque era that is still considered standard material for the classical guitarist.

Acoustic guitars are similar to their “classical” cousins. Both variations use a combination of a soundboard and a hollow instrument body in order to produce an audible sound. The acoustic guitar, however, has a thinner neck and uses steel guitar strings instead of nylon or animal gut. These instruments also tend to have a slightly larger body than does the classical variety.

The electric guitar and bass guitar are by far the most popular variations in today’s popular music. Unlike acoustic or classical guitars, these instruments require the use of external guitar amps in order to produce sound. The introduction of the Fender guitar, the Gibson guitar and the electric bass guitar, revolutionized the world of modern music. They have inspired multiple generations of musicians and fans, making them one of the most popular instruments in modern history.

Custom guitars are becoming more popular with many advanced guitar players. Whether it’s an entire instrument, or just a custom guitar neck, the high quality of the craftsmanship tends to make them quite expensive. However, most professionals believe that the expense is well worth it.

There are a variety of guitar accessories that are very common with today’s players. Besides obvious things such as a guitar strap and strings, additional items such as tuners and effects pedals are ubiquitous. Every year more and more accessories are invented and marketed to guitar players around the world.
